The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team returned to GCU Arena on Monday night to take on UT Rio Grande Valley and vanquished the Vaqueros 25-11, 25-19, 25-22.
"I feel like our offense production was pretty good tonight," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "
Yeny Murillo's 16 for 33 with no errors is a great night for her attacking, for sure.
Sarah Hagge's nine for 18 with one error on 50% kill is another great job offensively."
Murillo, a senior outside hitter, led the Lopes (5-2, 5-2 WAC) with a stellar performance of 16 kills and two blocks. Middle blocker
Kaira Moss, a junior, added 11 kills and two blocks while senior opposite hitter
Sarah Hagge totaled nine kills. GCU senior libero
K.J. Adams totaled a game-high 23 digs. Sophomore setter
Klaire Mitchell tallied 39 assists with two kills to sweep the match from UTRGV (0-7, 0-5 WAC).
"I felt like we executed extremely well in Set 1 and, at times, we did in Sets 2 and 3," Nollan said. "But I felt like, at times, we still were not as crisp as we would like to be."
The first set was all GCU from the get-go, as Moss and Murillo had back-to-back kills to give the Lopes the first two points. GCU went on a nine-point run to make the score 13-3. The Lopes continued to keep the Vaqueros at arm's distance when they went on another scoring run with four consecutive kills by Moss and freshman outside hitter
Giorgia Turri, who lifted the Lopes to a 21- 8 lead. A service ace on set point by freshman
Ava Mason secured the first set for GCU.
UTRGV managed to pick up the first point of the second set and led until back-to-back kills by Moss spun things back in favor of the Lopes. The Vaqueros stuck around this time, only trailing by a few points for the second half of the second set. The Lopes again won the set on a service ace, this time by Mitchell.
In the final set, the Vaqueros went back and forth with the Lopes. Two errors by UTRGV gave the Lopes a 22-19 lead. On her ninth kill of the match, Hagge sealed the three-set win for GCU.
"The great thing about this schedule is we get to come back tomorrow and try and clean some things up and try and continue to get better in our march toward the WAC Tournament," Nollan said.
GCU looks to complete the series sweep when it returns to GCU Arena to take on UTRGV on Tuesday at 3 p.m.
