All 16 home matches set to be played at GCU Arena this season
The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team released its 28-match schedule for the upcoming spring season on Thursday.
The Lopes will play every home match in GCU Arena for the first time in program history, treating the Havocs and the rest of the GCU fans to a 16-match home slate starting with the Jan. 7-8 opening weekend against McKendree.
After playing five matches in GCU Arena last spring with mostly cardboard cutout fans, Lopes head coach Matt Werle and his team are excited to welcome back a full crowd.
"I am very pleased with how the schedule took form for the 2022 season," Werle said. "As much as we love competing against MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) teams, it'll be nice to get a gauge of how we compare nationally this season. We know our schedule is an extremely tough one, but we are ready."
The first roadtrip of the season takes GCU to Pennsylvania for first-time matches against Penn State on Jan. 13 and 15. Sandwiched in between on Jan. 14, Werle faces his alma mater, Juniata, where he was a four-time All-American and led the Eagles to three Division III national titles from 2006-09.
After a quick trip to UC San Diego on Jan. 21, the Lopes will wrap up the month with home matches against Benedictine and Master's on Jan. 27 and 28.
February starts with matches at Loyola Chicago and Lewis, along with home matches against UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 11 and 12 . The Lopes will kick off MPSF play at home with Feb. 18 and 20 matches against Pepperdine, one of five 2021 NCAA tournament teams on the schedule, before traveling to BYU and UCLA for the next four games.
The end of GCU's regular season will be a home-heavy schedule with eight of the Lopes' final 10 matches at GCU Arena. Two matches apiece against Harvard and Tusculum will conclude nonconference play in March before the Lopes make their final road trip to conference foe Concordia.
The regular season finishes with matches against Stanford on March 31 and April 2 and against USC on April 15 and 16. The MPSF Championships will take place from April 20-23.
