The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team extended its home winning streak to 18 matches and moved into a first-place ite in the WAC's West Division on Saturday after taking down Stephen F. Austin 21-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-22, at GCU Arena.
Despite dropping the opening set to the Lumberjacks, the Lopes (14-4, 6-3 WAC) battled back to win the next three sets with career highs from junior setter
Klaire Mitchell for assists (60) and freshman outside hitter
McKenzie Wise for kills (23).
"Today was a hard-fought match," Lopes head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We had
Klaire Mitchell,
McKenzie Wise and
Teagan DeFalco all set or tie records, which is awesome. Our team continues to develop as we prepare for the conference tournament. We have had one goal the entire year and that has not changed. Next week, we will prepare for some tough road matches."
Mitchell shattered her previous career high of 56 assists, set Sept. 9, 2019, while helping Wise to her 23 career-high kills that also lead the match.
In the opening set, the Lopes started out a little flat as SFA took a 13-6 lead. GCU got within two points of the Lumberjacks after Mitchell found freshman opposite hitter
Sydney Reed and sophomore outside hitter
Ashley Lifgren for back-to-back kills. Four straight points by the Lopes began with back-to-back kills from Wise and gave the Lopes the lead for the first time (21-20). Those were the last points the Lopes scored in the set, as SFA ran off the next five points to take a 1-0 match lead.
In the second set, the Lumberjacks led 10-8 before back-to-back kills by Lifgren tied the score. GCU and SFA went back and forth until the end of the set to force extra points. At 25-25, the Lopes closed the set and evened the match once Mitchell found Wise for a kill.
GCU carried its momentum into the third set as graduate libero
Teagan DeFalco served five straight points, including an ace. The Lopes strung together another five-point run and increased their lead to 15-7 after Mitchell found junior middle blocker
Annabelle Kubinski for two kills. With the Lumberjacks cutting the Lopes lead to 24-23, Wise sealed the set with a kill from DeFalco for a 2-1 match lead.
In the final set of the match, the Lopes took an 8-3 lead before SFA responded and cinched the score at 11-11. The Lopes pulled ahead again with a three-point run, highlighted by a kill from Wise. Mitchell found junior middle blocker
Hannah Eskes for a kill and set point. SFA managed to score one more point before Mitchell found Eskes again to secure the win.
The Lopes are back in action on Thursday at Seattle U (4-16, 1-8 WAC) for a 6 p.m. match.
