LAS CRUCES. N.M. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team lost 2-1 at New Mexico State 2-1 on a double-overtime goal Saturday.
The Lopes (12-3-2, 5-1-2 WAC) took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute but surrendered toals to New Mexico State (8-9, 4-4 WAC) in the 78th minute and the golden goal with 15 seconds remaining in the match.
With the loss, GCU and Utah Valley sit tied atop the WAC's West Division standings at 17 points with two matches left to play. The two teams meet in the regular-season finale at GCU Stadium on Saturday.
After a defensive first half when GCU only took three shots, the Lopes broke through with the game's opening goal in the 59th minute. Senior forward
Marleen Schimmer took a corner kick that found fifth-year defender
Hannah Edwards in the middle of the box. Edwards headed in the ball for her third goal of the season.
Schimmer picked up her 10th assist of the season and became the first player in program history with 10 goals and 10 assists in a season.
Leading 1-0, the Lopes withstood a strong Aggie offensive attack that came with three corner kicks. New Mexico State scored the equalizer on a goal by Loma McNeese from 20 yards out.
Tied at 1-1, the Lopes headed to overtime for the second straight game after tying with CBU last week on the road.
GCU outshot New Mexico State 4-3 in the overtime periods and were about to escape with a draw before the Aggies stole the win.
At 109:45, the ball was cleared by GCU but wound up going to NMSU's Grace Olson, who fired a long-range shot that deflected off the crossbar and into the goal.
The Lopes will wrap up the regular season next week at home against Dixie State and Utah Valley on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.
