NORCO, Calif. – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team wrapped up its weekend road trip with a 1-1 draw at California Baptist on Sunday.
After falling behind 1-0 just before halftime, Lopes senior forward
Marleen Schimmer converted a penalty kick in the 56th minute to tie the match.
The defense was solid the rest of the way, as the Lopes earned a point in the draw and remained in first place in the WAC's West Division with three regular-season games remaining.
GCU (12-2-2, 5-0-2 WAC) was aggressive on offense from the start, taking three shots in the first six minutes while holding CBU (6-6-2, 4-2-1 WAC) to just one. The Lancers broke through just before halftime on a goal by Deniah Wells in the 44th minute.
It marked the first time the Lopes trailed at halftime since Sept. 11 against New Mexico.
The deficit didn't last long in the second half, when GCU picked up the equalizer on a Schimmer penalty kick in the 56th minute. It was the conference-best 10th goal of the season for Schimmer as she became the first Lopes player with double-digit goals since 2010.
Tied at 1-1, both teams continued to push for the game-winning goal. GCU forward
Dani Babb hit the left post in the 71st minute and Lopes goalkeeper
Jordan Ferguson made a save with 15 seconds left in regulation to push the game to overtime.
In the two overtime periods, the Lopes attacked on the offense end, outshooting CBU 8-2. GCU had a scoring chance in the 94th minute, but back-to-back shots by midfielders
Haley Bostard and
Reese Mendenhall were stopped by CBU goalkeeper Romy Salvador, who finished with a season-high seven saves.
Schimmer paced the GCU offense with six shots, including three on goal, while Ferguson made four saves and lowered her conference-leading goals against average to 0.64.
The Lopes will wrap up their season series with New Mexico State on the road on Saturday.
