STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Grand Canyon was in a tough tangle at Tarleton for a second consecutive night, but the closeout Saturday night was even more emphatic the second time around to leave town with a WAC-opening sweep.
Mired in a back-and-forth game as Tarleton tied the game at 46-46 with 4:19 to play, GCU responded with 13 unanswered points down the stretch for a 59-48 win at Wisdom Gym.
The Lopes (6-3, 2-0 WAC) shut out Tarleton for four consecutive minutes as GCU junior small forward
Oscar Frayer's fourth 3-pointer of the game ignited the fantastic finish. The Lopes dominated defensively, holding Tarleton to 30.2% shooting from the field to give them four games in which they have held opponents to 35% or worse shooting this season.
GCU center Asbjørn Midtgaard recorded his third double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds and also set a career high with five blocked shots, which also tied a Division I-era program record.
Sophomore power forward
Gabe McGlothan gave the Lopes a big bench boost for the second consecutive night, following up a 14-point, seven-rebound game with a season-high 11 rebounds to go with six points and a blocked shot.
For the second consecutive night, GCU and Tarleton were tied at the half but it felt much more like the style that the Lopes wanted to play. GCU did not get there right away, falling behind 14-9 when Lopes head coach
Bryce Drew picked up his first technical foul of the season.
Taking better advantage of the size differential, GCU won the rebounding 39-28 and points in the paint 24-16 to overcome 15 turnovers. After giving up a career-high 30 points to Montre Gipson on Friday night, the Lopes kept him to nine points Saturday night.
But the fouls swung GCU's way as the double-teaming and triple-teaming in the post could not contain Midtgaard. The 7-foot, 270-pound center put up a 14-point, six-rebound first half before leaving early with two fouls and scored eight of those points during a 13-0 run that rallied GCU to a 26-22 lead.
That run ended when Midtgaard picked up his second foul, but the Lopes' zone defense success maintained the lead until Tarleton's Freddy Hicks made a tying 3-pointer with 1:12 remaining. GCU ended the first half without scoring for the final 4:46, as the Lopes only had six made field goals outside of Midtgaard. Five of them were 3-pointers.
