Women land at 123, men at 137 in season debut of NET rankings
As the calendar flips to 2021 and WAC play sits on the weekend horizon, the NCAA released the first iteration of its NET rankings which are used to help select and seed teams for the NCAA basketball tournaments.
Grand Canyon sits at 137 on the men's side, leading the WAC. The Lopes check in at 123 on the women's side, ranking second in the WAC.
The GCU men finished 278 in the NET rankings a year ago, which was the debut season of the new rankings system. NCAA women's basketball is utilizing the NET rankings for the first time this season. The women finished 246 in RPI last year.
The NET utilizes two factors in ranking teams: the Team Value Index (factors in results, quality of opponent and location) and the team's net efficiency (efficiency metrics scaled for quality of opponent and location).
The men's and women's teams are set to open WAC play by taking on conference newcomer Tarleton for Friday-Saturday back-to-backs.
Other notable GCU opponents: Arizona State (105), Nevada (145), San Francisco (94), Colorado (14)
Other notable GCU opponents: Northern Arizona (100), Southern Utah (159)
