LOS ANGELES – Grand Canyon men's volleyball fell to No. 9 UCLA on Friday in its first match of the season. The No. 10 Lopes (0-1, 0-1 MPSF) lost 25-20-, 25-22, 25-22 to the Bruins (1-0, 1-0 MPSF) at Pauley Pavilion.
GCU newcomer
Jackson Hickman, a sophomore transfer from Lewis, led the team on offense in his debut. The outside hitter recorded 10 kills, four digs, an assist and a block in the three-set match. Freshman middle blocker
Jacob Guerber also contributed in his first Lopes match, putting up six kills and two blocks after sitting out 2020 because of injury.
On defense, senior outside hitter
David Kisiel led GCU with three blocks and added nine kills and three digs. Fellow senior
Onur Cukur served as the primary setter, tallying 26 assists, while junior libero
Avery Enriques led the team with nine digs.
Senior outside hitter
Trevor Weary started the season with an ace for the first point of the season. GCU was able to capitalize, pulling ahead 5-3 after Hickman's first kill. A three-point run from the Bruins put them back on track and made it a close battle through the remainder of the set. The Lopes tied at 9-9 with a block from Kisiel and sophomore
Kyle Thompson but were unable to take the lead.
Head coach
Matt Werle called GCU's first timeout of the match after a 5-1 run by UCLA gave the Bruins a 14-10 lead. The Lopes went point for point with the Bruins before closing the gap to 19-17. UCLA reset with their first timeout, going on to win the set 25-20.
UCLA took an early lead in the second set and didn't let it go. The Lopes stayed within three for the early parts of the set, until the Bruins pulled ahead 14-10. GCU battled but fell behind 19-14. They brought it back within two, 24-22, but UCLA took set point with a kill.
The Lopes came into the third set with new energy, keeping the match close to trail by one at 8-7. A 5-1 run by the Bruins forced a GCU timeout, trailing by five. The Lopes picked up three straight points to close the gap to two at 13-11. They were able to hold on, closing it to one at 17-16 and fighting through to 19-18. UCLA strung together a pair of points for a three-point lead before finishing the set 25-22 over the Lopes.
GCU returns to action on Saturday at No. 12 Concordia Irvine. The Lopes play at CU Arena at 8 p.m. Phoenix time.
