Graduate transfer Akin-Otiko switches from track to basketball
"Chloe is going to bring a level of athleticism to this team that will complement our system in the best way," Miller said. "At times, our brand of basketball will look like a track meet, so I have a feeling she is going to be right in her comfort zone. Chloe had the opportunity to play Division I basketball and track out of high school, so for her to say she will have now participated in both is quite an accomplishment.
"Her experience competing at the highest level and understanding of what that takes will positively impact our team. She is such a great person and an outstanding student that will enhance the culture of our program. Lope Nation, you're not going to want to miss the excitement and energy this one will bring to the floor, so please help me in welcoming her to Phoenix."
Akin-Otiko was a member of the Kansas 1,600-meter relay team that was set to compete at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in March before the season was canceled due to COVID-19. She owns a personal-best time of 56.51 seconds in the 400-meter run. Her Jayhawk honors included U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic, Academic All-Big 12 First Team and Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team.
Akin-Otiko was a basketball and track and field star at Bellevue West High School in Omaha, Nebraska. In 2016, she was named to the all-state first team in basketball. She holds the career and single-season records for points scored at Bellevue West. Akin-Otiko also won the Great Omaha Sports' Student-Athlete of the Year in 2016.
In all four years at Bellevue West, Akin-Otiko was named the Nebraska Girls Track and Field Gatorade Athlete of the Year. She won the state championship in the 100- and 200-meter dashes each year and won the 400-meter run state title twice.
Akin-Otiko comes from an athletic family as her father, James, played basketball at Oral Roberts (1983-87) and played professionally in Europe. Her sister, Alexis, was a basketball standout for Creighton from 2011-15 and coached at Concordia in 2016-17.
