Grand Canyon women's volleyball head coach
Tim Nollan announced the signings of setter Ava Mason of Wasington; opposite hitter Hope Hanak-Harper of Colorado and defensive specialist Mia Goulart of Hawai'i, who will join the 2020 team.
Mason, from Mill Creek, Washington, is a 5-foot-9 setter who started three varsity seasons at King's High School in nearby Shoreline.
"Ava is a natural leader who has always helped her team overachieve," Nollan said. "She is athletic and understands how to put her hitters into good situations. I am very excited to have her in the gym this fall."
Mason brings leadership and a winning attitude to the table as she helped lead King's to one state championship, a state runner-up finish and a third-place finish in Washington. Mason is a two-time pick for all-state first team and an all-conference honoree for the Knights. At King's, Ava also was a three-time all-conference golfer and participated at the state tournament three times.
"I chose GCU because of the competitive volleyball program and the campus atmosphere," Mason said." I also have cousins that attend GCU and family in the area. I am so excited to be a Lope."
Hanak-Harper joins the Lopes as a 6-foot opposite side hitter from Broomfield, Colorado. Hanak-Harper spent three years on varsity for Broomfield High School. As a senior, she earned first-team honors for all-conference and all-region, along with being named to the all-state second team. Hope was also selected to play in two all-state games. In her three years with the Eagles, she totaled 434 kills with a 2.5 kills per set and a .263 hitting percentage.
"I chose GCU because of what they have to offer academically, as well as athletically," Hanak-Harper said. "I look forward to being a part of a competitive program that is continually improving."
Hanak-Harper also excelled in the classroom as a three-time academic all-state awardee and will be graduating cum laude.
"Hope has a good left arm and I know she will develop into a point-scoring machine," Nollan said. "She has always had leadership roles on her teams, and she knows how to put in hard work to obtain her goals. I am excited to have Hope playing for the Lopes."
Goulart, a defensive specialist from Waipahu, Hawai'i native, will join the Lopes after two varsity seasons for Kamehameha Schools Kapalama.
"Mia is a natural passer with excellent touch on the ball," Nollan said. "She finds ways to keep rallies alive and her passion and fire fuel her teams. She will be an excellent addition for us."
In her senior season, she totaled 143 digs with an average of 2.2 digs per set while adding 13 aces for the Warriors. She helped her team to the 2019 state championship and graduated with honors.
"I chose GCU because, when I visited the campus, I felt at home and everyone was very friendly and welcoming," Goulart said. "I loved the campus and I knew I would be able to make lifelong friendships here. When I was given the opportunity to play volleyball, it was definitely a sign and I can't wait to start my journey at GCU."
