Grand Canyon men's basketball head coach
Bryce Drew continued to add to his first-year Lopes roster with the signing of four-star recruit
Jayden Stone on Monday.
Stone, originally from Perth, Australia, has played prep and club basketball in America for the past three years, including the past season for the fourth-ranked program in the nation, Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kansas. The 6-foot-3, 175-pounder was a McDonald's All-America nominee and ranked 23rd among high school shooting guards by ESPN.
"I have known Jayden for a couple years and have always enjoyed watching him play," Drew said. "His shooting ability and offensive skill quickly stand out when watching him play. He is a great fit for for our program and campus."
Stone previously played in Alabama, where he was the Class 2A Mr. Basketball when he averaged 21.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists as a junior for Sacred Heart Catholic High School in Anniston. He played as a sophomore for Central Park Christian before transferring because the Birmingham school dropped its basketball program.
Stone moved to the U.S. at age 15 to seek a great basketball challenge and join his father, Shawn, a former Marine who played basketball at CSU Northridge in his mid-20s and settled in Australia for a pro career before returning to Alabama and coaching there.
The younger Stone made a quick impression in the U.S., earning praise for his shooting, fundamentals, intelligence and composure. Last year, he was selected for the National Basketball Players Association Top 100 High School Basketball Camp and received several offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Creighton, Iowa State, Kansas State, Michigan State, Oregon, Saint Mary's and Tennessee.
This season, Stone helped Sunrise Christian to a 22-3 record against a national prep schedule, including a 17-point effort in a nationally broadcast 91-48 victory against Hillcrest Prep in the Spalding Hoophall Classic.
