'Big Dane' transfers to GCU after 3 seasons at Wichita State
Grand Canyon head coach Bryce Drew began work on bolstering his first Lopes roster with the addition of Asbjørn Midtgaard, a 7-foot transfer from Wichita State.
Midtgaard, originally from Helsingor, Denmark, is transferring to GCU after being a part of Shockers teams that went 70-31 over the past three seasons.
Midtgaard's playing time was reduced during conference play this year, leaving his junior season's averages at 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 8.0 minutes per game. He has shot 58.6% from the field for his college career, including the second-best clip (63.2%) in Wichita State history as a sophomore.
Last year, Wichita State honored him with the Shocker Assist Award for his sportsmanship and support of teammates.
Midtgaard began playing basketball eight years ago, when he was 14, after competing in the more popular national sports of soccer and handball. Playing against older basketball players in the Danish League, he was named the 2017 Young Player of the Year and placed on the All-Danish Team.

At 7 feet and 267 pounds with a 7-4 wingspan, Midtgaard brings stature as a rim protector, post defender, rebounder and screener. He won Wichita State's Most Improved Player for his sophomore season, when he averaged 3.9 points, 3.1 rebounds and 0.8 blocked shots in 11.3 minutes per game and helped the Shockers to the 2019 NIT semifinals by averaging 5.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks during the tournament.Midtgaard's playing time was reduced during conference play this year, leaving his junior season's averages at 1.5 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.5 blocks in 8.0 minutes per game.
