Grand Canyon senior
Carlos Johnson wrapped up his final regular season in style, scoring 33 points to lead a Lopes win over CSU Bakersfield and secure the WAC Player of the Week honor.
"It was Senior Night, and we wanted to go out with a bang," Johnson said. "Me knowing that my family drove a long way, and they didn't come here to see us lose. They came here to see a show, and that's what I wanted to give them."
Johnson did his scoring on an efficient 11-for-19 shooting clip, going 4 for 7 from distance and 7 of 8 from the foul line. He also pulled down five rebounds, blocked a shot and committed just two turnovers in 35 minutes of play.
"I think he's always been aggressive, but the thing was when he makes that outside shot he's hard to guard and did a good job of that," GCU head coach
Dan Majerle said. "He was more under control and not as quick as he usually is. We needed it. It was a big night for him. Happy for him."
The 33-point outburst ranked as the second-most points of Johnson's career — only behind the iconic 35-point performance in last year's WAC Tournament — and his third 30-point game. It was the sixth-highest scoring output by a GCU player in the Division I era.
Of Johnson's 33 points, 23 came in the first half when the Lopes took a six-point lead over CSU Bakersfield.
For Johnson, it was his second WAC Player of the Week honor of the season.
He also won the award on Feb. 10.
GCU is bound for Las Vegas and the WAC Tournament with the fourth-seeded Lopes set to tip off against fifth-seeded Kansas City at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday in Orleans Arena.
