Grand Canyon senior
Carlos Johnson's contributions to the Lopes' record-setting victory at California Baptist earned him the WAC Player of the Week honor.
Johnson went 6 for 6 from the field, including 4 for 4 on 3-pointers, for a team-high 25 points when GCU won 103-98 at CBU on Saturday night. The Lopes set their program's Division I-era records for points in regulation and field goal percentage (62.7%).
It was the most field goals and 3-pointers that Johnson has made in a game without missing during his career. The 6-foot-4 guard also led GCU on the boards with six rebounds, tied his season high for free throws made (going 9 for 11) and added a blocked shot and an assist.
The Centralia, Illinois, native who attended Phoenix Shadow Mountain High School already has passed the 1,000-point career mark this season on his way to being the second-leading scorer in WAC games at 17.7 points per game. He also is tied for field goal percentage in conference games at 50%.
Johnson is averaging career highs for points per game (15.4), rebounds per game (5.2), assists per game (1.7), steals per game (1.1) and blocks per game (0.5) while shooting a career-high 35.6% from 3-point range.
The award marks Johnson's first WAC weekly honor of the season. Junior teammate
Alessandro Lever also won WAC Player of the Week twice this season (Dec. 16-22 and Jan. 13-19). The Lopes are tied for third place in the WAC entering home games against Kansas City on Thursday night and Chicago State on Saturday night.
