The Grand Canyon women's basketball team plays its final regular-season game at CSU Bakersfield on Saturday with the Lopes jockeying for the No. 2 or No. 3 seed in next week's WAC Tournament.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- WAC TOURNAMENT SEEDING: The Lopes and Roadrunners will be looking to secure seeds for the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas next week. GCU will either be the No. 2 or No. 3 seed for next week's WAC Tournament. The Lopes hold a one-game lead on Utah Valley, which will receive a forfeit win Saturday from Chicago State for tournament seeding purposes. GCU can clinch the No. 2 seed by defeating CBU Bakersfield. If it loses and ties Utah Valley for second, the tiebreaker will come down to the teams' head-to-head records against whichever team finishes fourth. CSU Bakersfield is in sixth place at 7-8 but only a half-game behind New Mexico State (8-8) and a game behind UT Rio Grande Valley (8-7).
- NICE TO SEE YOU AGAIN: GCU and CSU Bakersfield met on Jan. 4 in the WAC opener for both squads. The Roadrunners held on a for a 59-54 win in GCU Arena despite Lopes freshman Mae Bryant coming off the bench for a team-high 15 points in 18 minutes.
- WHO WILL LEAD GCU IN SCORING: Senior Da'jah Daniel (306 points, 11.8 ppg) and freshman Jada Holland (303 points, 11.7 ppg) lead the Lopes in scoring with just one regular-season game remaining. Daniel is the conference leader in rebounds per game (10.3) and blocked shots per game (1.5) while sharing the WAC lead for field goal percentage (54.5%). Her rebounding average ranks 25th in the nation while also ranking 12th nationally for defensive rebounds per game (7.6). Holland is the WAC assists leader with 5.0 per game.
SCOUTING
CSU Bakersfield has lost four of its last five games, but two were in overtime. Last week, the Roadrunners lost by nine to UT Rio Grande Valley and five to New Mexico State.
Sophomore Jayden Eggleston, a 6-foot-1 power forward, leads CSU Bakersfield with 11.9 points per game while sophomore point guard Ashley Austin adds 10.1 points per game off the bench. Junior Vanessa Austin, a 6-1 center, is one of three WAC players shooting better than 50% from the field at 52.2%.
