Grand Canyon opens a five-game slate of home action with the hosting of a two-game midweek series against New Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday at GCU Ballpark. The Lopes and Lobos meet up for the sixth straight season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. on Tuesday and 2 p.m. on Wednesday.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW

PITCHING THE STRENGTH: The Lopes pitching staff is off to an impressive start this season. Through 11 games, GCU ranks 26th in the nation with a staff ERA of 2.39. Additionally, the control has been stellar with the Lopes ranking 13th in fewest walks per nine innings (2.39) and 23rd in strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.55).
CHALLENGING START: Difficult schedules are nothing new to the GCU baseball program. Thus far, the Lopes slate checks in as the 36th-toughest schedule nationally. Among teams with winning records, GCU's schedule ranks as the ninth-most challenging.
BATTLE OUT WEST: The GCU versus Mountain West matchup was kind to the Lopes last season with a 4-1 record against the conference. The Lopes took a pair from Nevada, won one against UNLV and split with New Mexico. Beyond this series, the Lopes will also face UNLV home and away later this month.

SCOUTING

New Mexico is off to an 8-3 start for the second straight season. In an odd scheduling quirk, six of the Lobos' first 11 games have come against BYU. The two programs met twice in Surprise, Arizona, at a neutral-site tournament before New Mexico hosted BYU for a four-game series last weekend. The Lobos won five of the six matchups. New Mexico also swept a three-game home series from Northern Colorado, one of GCU's WAC foes. The Lobos have shown a good balance thus far with a .283 batting average and 3.69 ERA.

WHAT'S NEXT

GCU will close out a season-opening stretch that featured 13 of the first 16 games at home. The Lopes host Pacific for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 6 p.m.
