RIVERSIDE, Calif. — Grand Canyon posted its Division I records for scoring in a regulation game and shooting percentage to win 103-98 at California Baptist on Saturday night.
The Lopes led for the final 33 minutes of the game to survive the Lancers setting their program record with 19 3-pointers. GCU (10-13, 5-4 WAC) looked in peril early when junior center and leading scorer
Alessandro Lever picked up two fouls in the first 3:08 of the game. Senior power forward
Lorenzo Jenkins stepped in to rescue the Lopes, posting a 17-point first half on the way to tying his career scoring high of 20.
GCU staved off every threat from CBU (17-7, 7-3 WAC) by shooting 62.7% from the field and stayed in the No. 2 WAC Tournament seeding position with the Lancers being ineligible for the postseason in their Division I transition. CBU became the first team to lose a Division I game this season while making 19 3-pointers and GCU became the second road team this season to shoot at least 62.7% and score at least 103 points against a Division I opponent.
The Lopes lost to CBU at home on Jan. 11 with their worst shooting game of the season (33.8%) and scored 57 points. On Saturday, GCU scored at least 50 in each half and set the program's Division I-era record for shooting at 62.7% from the field.
With 16 assists to only eight turnovers, GCU shared the ball well to have three 20-point scorers. Lopes senior swingman
Carlos Johnson scored a team-high 25 points and did not miss a shot from the field, going 6 for 6 overall with 4-for-4 shooting on 3s and 9-for-11 shooting on free throws. GCU junior guard
Mikey Dixon added 24 points, going 3 for 5 on 3s as the Lopes hit 11 of 18 shots from 3-point range.
