GCU sophomore named top offensive player
Sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke is the first Grand Canyon men's volleyball player to earn Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Player of the Week honors this season, the conference announced Monday.
Janke was named the Offensive Player of the Week after the Lopes' 2-0 homestand last week against Benedictine and No. 9 Stanford. Janke led the Lopes (8-2) offensively on Wednesday against Benedictine with 11 kills, two blocks, two digs and one ace while hitting .500. His efforts helped GCU sweep the Redhawks for the team's sixth consecutive win.
The Carlsbad, California, native helped the Lopes make history with the program's first win over No. 9 Stanford on Saturday night at Antelope Gym. Janke recorded 12 kills, three aces and three digs while hitting .476 in the match. The 3-0 win marked the first time GCU has defeated Stanford in the program's history and extended the team's current win streak to seven.
Janke leads the team with 20 aces this season, as well as ranking second on the team in kills (82) and digs (42). He ranks fifth nationally in aces per set at 0.69.
The Lopes return to action on Saturday in their first conference road match of the season. GCU takes on USC at 8 p.m. Phoenix time in Los Angeles.
