Pending university clearance, U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team performance analyst and adjunct coach
Jeff Liu will join Grand Canyon as an assistant coach, GCU head coach
Tim Nollan announced Thursday.
Liu will continue his role with the U.S. National Team's coaching staff through the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo and join the Lopes staff in August.
Since joining the the U.S. National Team staff in 2017, Liu has been an instrumental part in helping the American women consistently reach the podium. Team USA has won consecutive FIVB
Volleyball Nations League titles in 2018 and 2019, won a Silver Medal at the 2019 FIVB World Cup and a qualification into the 2020 Olympic Games.
"I am extremely excited to welcome a coach like
Jeff Liu to our program," said Nollan, whose GCU program is coming off a 24-6 season. "We value his experience with USA Volleyball and working with Coach (Karch) Kiraly and the National Team staff over the last quad. Seeing the game played all around the world, different styles, different ways of training and working with some extremely elite level kids will be a great breath of fresh air for our program. We are always looking to improve upon on what we do and to have the best here, both on the court and in our staff. I think
Jeff Liu absolutely fits that bill."
Liu has served in similar roles at the collegiate level. For 2018-19, he was the volunteer assistant coach at CSU Fullerton during the U.S. National Team's offseason. He also was the technical coordinator for the USC women's and men's indoor volleyball teams and the beach volleyball team from 2015 to 2017. During his time with the Trojans, he helped them qualify for three straight NCAA tournaments, including the best season in USC history in 2015. That Trojans team went 33-3 during the regular season, claimed the Pac-12 championship and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA tournament. The Trojans advanced to the Elite Eight in 2015 and 2017. With the beach team, Liu helped USC win back-to-back NCAA titles in 2015 and 2016.
Before joining USC, Liu spent one season as an assistant coach for Maryland-Baltimore County women's volleyball. He earned his first collegiate coaching position as an assistant coach with Saint Joseph, a Division III program in West Hartford, Connecticut, from 2012 to2014.
"
Jeff Liu is establishing himself as a bright, hardworking student of the game," former USC head coach Mick Haley said. "His teaching skills are superior, as well as his understanding of the complexities of the sport. His work in video analysis gives him an extreme advantage in analyzing both home team strengths and weaknesses, as well as constructing ways to attack the opponent.
"Jeff's approach with the players is very complimentary and he is easy to work with as a staff member. I have always admired that he will usually have an opinion whenever asked. Adding
Jeff Liu to the coaching staff can only be a giant upgrade for the program and the staff."
Liu also worked as an assistant coach in the USA Volleyball High Performance Program. He was an assistant coach for the Girls A2 Select and Girls A3 Select programs in 2015. Liu also served as the associate head coach of the Girls Select A2 Invitational Team in 2016.
Liu graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a bachelor's degree in business technology in 2008. While at Stevens, he founded the men's club volleyball team and served as its assistant coach and four-year captain. In 2016, Liu graduated from Concordia-Irvine with his master's degree in coaching and athletic administration.
"Our USA Women's National Team program is delighted for Jeff and Grand Canyon University, and his opportunity to coach there starting in the fall," Kiraly said. "He has a wealth of experience working with a wide variety of coaching styles and principles, and he's synthesizing a really clear vision for coaching this game. We're so thankful to have Jeff along on this path, one that will take us together all the way through the Tokyo Closing Ceremonies on August 9. Though we'll miss him greatly after the Olympics, we can't wait to watch what he'll do with the Lopes as full-time assistant doach."
