WACO, Texas — In Day 2 of the Getterman Classic, Grand Canyon started Saturday with a 9-3 loss to Prairie View A&M.
The Panthers (2-6) scored four runs on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. With a runner on second and one out, GCU junior
Lexy Coons came into pitch and recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
Lopes freshman right fielder
Jaiden Reid led-off the second inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on an error by Prairie View A&M. A single through the left side by junior third baseman
Kaylee Dietrich scored Reid. GCU junior first baseman
Lilly Bishop singled to right center to add two more runs and cut the deficit to 4-3.
The Panthers scored one run in the bottom of the second to take a 5-3 lead over the Lopes and added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Prairie View A&M extended its lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with three runs on two hits.
GCU (2-7) will play its second game of the day at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time) against Baylor.
Tough battle with the Bears
The Bears jumped out to an early lead over the Lopes as they hung two-runs in the first inning. Freshman pitcher
Sydnie Sahhar kept Baylor off the board in the second and third innings.
A single up the middle by sophomore short stop
Savannah Tourville jump started GCU's offense.
Jaiden Reid bunted for a base hit to load the bases, then a single by freshman second baseman
Kristin Fifield tied it up at 2-2.
Baylor reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring two-runs on three hits. Freshman center fielder
Mickey Covarrubio kept the Lopes alive in the top of the seventh with a single up the middle with one out, but GCU ended up falling to Baylor.
The Lopes will conclude the Getterman classic on Sunday with Western Illinois at 9:00 a.m. (Phoenix time).
