After scoring 10 runs on nine hits in an opening-day win against No. 22 Oklahoma State, the Grand Canyon offense struggled to string hits together in a 6-4 loss to the Cowboys on Saturday at GCU Ballpark.
Trailing 6-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, GCU (1-1) scored two runs on a two-out single by junior second baseman
Drew Smith after pinch-hitters
Cuba Bess and
Tayler Aguilar and junior left fielder
Juan Colato loaded the bases. Lopes junior right fielder
Dominic Grissom, who started GCU's scoring with a RBI single in the first, struck out with runners on the corners to end the game.
Oklahoma State (1-1) collected 11 hits and was led by first basemen Alix Garcia, whose two-run, fourth-inning home run gave the Cowboys the lead for good.
Sophomore
Pierson Ohl made his first start of the season for GCU and went 7 2/3 innings with six hits and four runs allowed on 100 pitches, showing his improved stamina.
The Lopes started the game just as it did on opening night, scoring in the bottom of the first with Grissom picking up his first RBI and hit at GCU on a single that scored sophomore third baseman
Jonny Weaver.
Oklahoma State responded with an RBI single and a two-run home run by Garcia in the fourth. After GCU junior shortstop
Channy Ortiz scored on a throwing error by Oklahoma State in the fifth, the Lopes batted just 2 for 11 with one walk until the ninth.
GCU relievers
Brodie Cooper-Vassalakis,
Cal Lambert and
Cole Hoskins made their first appearances of the year with Lambert picking up his first career strikeout and Hoskins retiring the only two batters he faced in the ninth.
The Lopes and Cowboys will meet at 1 p.m. Sunday for the rubber match of the opening three-game series at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
