Sophomore earns 1st career MPSF weekly award
Grand Canyon men's volleyball earned its second consecutive Offensive Player of the Week award from the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation on Monday when sophomore opposite Hugo Fischer. Fischer earned the honor for the first time after GCU's 3-0 win at USC on Saturday.
Fischer led the Lopes (9-2, 2-0 MPSF) with 17 kills and zero errors in the match, hitting a career-best .680 percentage to be named the MPSF Hitter of the Night. He also recorded four digs and two blocks (one solo, one assist) in the match.
The Verviers, Belgium, native has stepped up for the Lopes on offense this season after playing only seven sets as a freshman last season. Fischer has recorded career highs in kills (19), points (21.5), aces (four), digs (eight) and total blocks (fives) this season. He also has led GCU in two matches in each of the following statistics: kills, hitting percentage, service aces and total blocks.
Fischer is the second Lope this season to be recognized as the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week. Sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke earned the award last week after wins over Benedictine and No. 9 Stanford.
GCU returns to action on Friday against No. 2 BYU. The Lopes face the Cougars at 6 p.m. at GCU Arena.
