The Grand Canyon women's basketball team takes the court Saturday at 1 p.m. Following another record-setting game, the Lopes play Loyola Marymount at GCU Arena.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- Two games, two broken records: Head coach Molly Miller already has made her mark in the GCU record books. Just two games into her Lopes tenure, Miller's squad has set Division I-era records for scoring (93) and opponent turnovers (28).Â
- Freshman shakes off jitters: Freshman center Katie Scott contributed big against Benedictine Mesa as she sank 11 of 20 shot for a team-high 25 points as well as nine rebounds and five steals in only 20 minutes.
- Stay focused on the system: The Lopes look to build off the last two games with their focus on locking their defense down and creating pressure offensively with the fast-paced style that Miller instilled.
"When things don't go your way, like when you miss your first shot or you get a quick whistle on you, we've got to overcome that a little bit better," Miller said. "I think this was a good opportunity for us to learn and grow. We still want to pressure defense but we have to learn as the game goes along."
"That was definitely a learning experience for us as a team," Scott said. "I think we went in a little bit underestimating the other team. We have to learn that, on any night, anyone can beat anyone and that's the beauty of basketball. But at the same time, we can beat anyone on a good night so we have to take what we did tonight and learn from it and grow from it."

SCOUTING
After a 7-25 record last season, Loyola Marymount is 1-1 this season. After falling in the opener to USC, the Lions claimed their first win against UC Irvine.
The Lions return nine players, including last season's top scorer Ciera Ellington, who averaged 11.7 points per game and earned a spot on the WCC All-Freshman Team. LMU also returns seniors Chelsey Gipson, Jasmine Jones and Meghan Mandel. Gipson and Jones finished second and third, respectively, in scoring last season.
Sophomore forward/center Khari Clark is coming off a career-high 19 points against the Anteaters.Â
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU defeated crosstown NAIA foe Benedictine Mesa 80-72 on Wednesday at GCU Arena.
- The Lopes forced 28 turnovers against the Redhawks, setting the GCU Division I-era record.
- Scott nearly captured her first collegiate double-double as she led the Lopes with 25 points, nine rebounds and five steals.
WHAT'S NEXT
- GCU hosts in-state foe Northern Arizona on Wednesday. Then, the Lopes are on the road for the first time this season, when they will travel to Cedar City, Utah, to face Southern Utah on Dec. 12 and then to Cheney, Washington, to play at Eastern Washington on Dec. 14.
