The Grand Canyon roster for this season became more athletic and senior-laden Friday with an NCAA ruling that clears forward
Sean Miller-Moore to begin competition as a Lopes player in November.
Miller-Moore, a senior transfer from Oregon State, was granted an NCAA transfer waiver that allows him to play in a season that can start as early as Nov. 25.
"We're ecstatic that Sean will be able to play this year for us," GCU head coach
Bryce Drew said. "He brings us a lot of versatility. He can play both wing spots and he'll bring some experience after already being at a very good junior college and also coming from the Pac-12 at Oregon State."
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound swingman gives the Lopes a 14-man active roster this season, including five seniors, while
Dima Zdor, a Weber State transfer, will sit out this season's games and then have two seasons of eligibility for GCU.
"We're all going for the common goal," Miller-Moore said. "We all just want to win so that mentality helps a lot. I know all of our seniors want what is best for the team, rather than what's best for themselves. I'm excited to get the season started."
Miller-Moore, who was raised in the Toronto area, began his collegiate career at Moberly Area Community College in Missouri, where he averaged 18.5 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists for a 29-7 team that reached the national tournament's round of 32.
As a junior, Miller-Moore played in 29 games for Oregon State last season, averaging 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds in 8.8 minutes per game. He made 67.9% of his shots with an attacking style that relied on slashes, fastbreaks and crashing the offensive boards. His field goal percentage ranked 17th nationally for players with at least 50 attempts.
Miller-Moore lost his parents by age 6 and was raised by his grandmother, but he became the first member of his family to earn an associate's degree at Moberly and is a Sociology major at GCU.
"It felt like a relief," Miller-Moore said of learning he was eligible to play this season. "I'm just happy and excited. I feel like everyone is competing. We're all around the same level and we're all fighting for the same thing. I like that we compete in practice every day. It's going to be good."
GCU also recently received
a transfer waiver for 7-foot senior center Asbjorn Midtgaard, who played three seasons at Wichita State.
