The Grand Canyon women's basketball team dropped its conference opener 59-54 to CSU Bakersfield on Saturday at GCU Arena.
The Lopes and Roadrunners were tied at 48-48 with less than two minutes remaining, but Bakersfield ended the game on an 11-6 run for the win.
With the loss, GCU drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in WAC play while CSUB improves 9-5 and 1-0.
The Lopes received a career scoring high from freshman power forward
Mae Bryant, who scored 15 points and added six rebounds in 19 minutes of action off the GCU bench. Bryant was playing her sixth career game after missing time for injury.

Da'jah Daniel recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Lopes freshman guard
Jada Holland added seven points, five rebounds and three assists while sophomore backcourt mate
Laura Piera added a game-high six assists, to go with four rebounds and three points.
Bakersfield was led by Vanessa Austin with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Miracle Saxon added 10 points.
GCU won the boards 37-30 but the largest differences came in two categories. Bakersfield hit 7 of 16 3-pointers, compared to GCU going 0 for 7. At the free throw line, the Roadrunners converted 14 of 17, while the Lopes hit 14 of 23.
The game consisted of single-digit leads for most of the afternoon. Bakersfield led by 10 points in the second quarter, before the Lopes rallied to tie the game at 20-20 on freshman guard
Jada Moss' paint score at the 2:30 mark. The Roadrunners hit a 3-pointer on the final possession of the half to lead 23-20.
GCU trailed 41-36 to start the fourth quarter before finally pulling even at the 2:05 mark, when Piera made one of two free throws to even the game at 48-48.
After Bakersfield took the lead on a pair of free throws at the 1:32 mark, the Lopes could not pull even or take the lead. With GCU trailing 52-51, Roadrunners guard Ashley Austin made a 3-pointer from Ashley Austin with 34 seconds left to stretch the lead to 55-51.
GCU is back in action on Jan. 11 at California Baptist in Riverside.
