The Grand Canyon women's basketball team emerged with a strong first quarter Saturday but could not keep up with Kansas City as the Roos defeated the Lopes 74-53 on Saturday in GCU Arena.
The Lopes received a pair of double-doubles from power forwards
Da'jah Daniel, a senior, and
Mae Bryant, a freshman. Daniel recorded her fifth consecutive double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She is tied for 14th in the nation for double-doubles this seaosn with nine after having three last season when she was picked to the All-WAC second team.
Bryant recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench in 24 minutes.
GCU (7-8, 2-2 WAC) shot 50% from the field in the first quarter to take a 16-10 lead after sophmore guard
Venla Varis made her second 3-pointer. Kansas City (11-9, 4-2) outscored GCU 20-7 in the second quarter and the Roos led 30-23 at the break.
Lopes freshman
Jada Holland opened the second half with a 3-pointer to pull GCU within four but Kansas City spread the ball around to build a 23-point lead.
Jonaie Johnson led four Roos in double figures with 16 points. Ericka Mattingly added 15 points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The Lopes shot 36.2% from the field, compared to the Roos' 49.2%. GCU held a 35-34 advantage on the boards, including 12 offensive rebounds for an 11-2 advantage in second-chance points.
Lopes sophomore guard
Laura Piera added team highs for assists (five) and steals (three) with nine points.
GCU is back in action on Thursday night at Seattle U.
