When California Baptist took a 15-point lead with 14 minutes remaining, it looked as grim for Grand Canyon as it looked optimistic last week when the Lopes led by 12 midway through the second half and lost at CSU Bakersfield.
This time, GCU was the rallier. The Lopes worked that 15-point lead down to one with 46.9 seconds to go with a late 11-0 run but a Lancers drive by guard Brandon Boyd and ensuing free throws gave CBU a 61-57 victory at GCU Arena.
GCU (5-11, 0-2 WAC) held CBU (12-5, 3-1 WAC) to 35.8% shooting from the field and turned the Lancers over nine time in the second half but the Lopes only shot 34.2% from the field to have the comeback fall short.
GCU was led by junior center
Alessandro Lever and senior swingman
Carlos Johnson each scoring 18 points with Johnson also sharing the team rebounding lead with eight, matched by freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. Boyd led CBU with 16 points on 5-of-16 shooting while WAC Preseason Player of the Year Milan Acquaah went 4 for 13 with six turnovers.
The game opened ideally with a post-up score by Lever but he picked up an offensive foul on the next trip as the Lancers went on a 9-0 run. GCU's defense gave it a chance, pressuring WAC Preseason Player of the Year Milan Acquaah and challenging the Lancers' 3-point shots to keep CBU from making a field goal for nearly six minutes.
The Lopes' offense did not come along so swiftly but GCU did work its way back into the game with Lever and junior
Carlos Johnson accounting for all of the team's sparse scoring in the first 14 minutes.
GCU started to have a strong close to the first half when Lever and Johnson hit back-to-back jumpers to tie the score at 22-22 with 1:20 remaining but CBU reserve forward Bul Kuol closed the half with consecutive 3-pointers for a 28-22 Lancers lead. CBU, which ranked 21st in the nation for 3-point shooting entering the game, was 2 for 14 on 3-pointers until that first-half close.
