The Grand Canyon baseball program's 2019 recruiting class checked in at No. 30 in the national rankings released by
Collegiate Baseball on Monday. GCU's highest-ranked recruiting class is the runner-up among non-Power Five schools to Coastal Carolina (No. 28), which claimed the national title in 2016.
"To be named 30th for this year's recruiting class is just a testament to Coach
Gregg Wallis working his tail off," Lopes head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "It's a testament, too, to our program and our university. We've always felt like the train has been moving forward well and gaining steam. I think this is just another indication of that being true."
Out of 299 Division I programs, GCU checks in one spot behind Oklahoma and one spot ahead of Florida State in the 40-team rankings.
"You don't win baseball games on paper," Stankiewicz said. "You win them on the field. At the same time, it's exciting that people have recognized the level of talent that is coming in and being a part of our program."
The Lopes recruiting class, which is on campus this fall and eligible to compete when the season gets underway in February, features three 2019 MLB Draft picks who opted to delay professional opportunities to join GCU. Glendale (Ariz.) Community College transfer
Dawson McCarville went to Pittsburgh in the 30th round, Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton High School's Shane Murphy was a 31st-round pick of Philadelphia and Chandler (Ariz.) Seton Catholic High School's Luke Bell went in the 34th round to Arizona.
Drew Smith, a transfer from Northeast College in Nebraska, was the National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year after hitting .465 in 2019.
Juan Colato, a transfer from South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, was the conference's runner-up for Player of the Year in 2018 before sitting out 2019 with injury.
Cal Lambert,
Josh Buckley,
Blake Reilly,
Jack Slominski,
Tayler Aguilar and
Ty Siffermann join GCU out of high school with all-state recognition.
"Now we have to keep it moving," Stankiewicz said. "It's exciting, but we can't stop here. Coach Wallis is obviously a great coach but from a recruiting coordinating standpoint, he's on it and has built great relationships. I'm proud of the effort he's been putting into our program and it's showing."
GCU will release its full 2020 schedule in early October with competition slated to begin in mid-February.
