The Grand Canyon women's volleyball team opened the home season with a three-set win Friday night in front of 1,212 fans at GCU Arena, as the Lopes downed Eastern Washington 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.
"It was nice to get the win to kick off our homestand," GCU head coach
Tim Nollan said. "We had a balanced attack and applied great pressure with our serving. The crowd, as always, was amazing."
The Lopes (6-1) came out with fire to start the first and second sets by establishing a lead over the Eagles (2-6) and never looking back.
Eastern Washington went ahead in the third set, 4-1, for its first lead of the game, but the ensuing 9-0 GCU run switched the momentum. The Lopes went ahead by as many as nine before the Eagles made a last effort to catch up and closed the gap to 23-17.
Back-to-back kills by sophomore outside hitter
K.J. Adams sealed the sweep for GCU, giving the Lopes their third straight win.
The GCU attack was shared by eight players, including junior opposite
Sarah Hagge and sophomore middle blocker
Kaira Moss with seven kills apiece. Sophomore
Annabelle Kubinski and senior
Melody Horton added six each, while junior outside hitter
Yeny Murillo had five.
The trio of freshman setter
Klaire Mitchell, Adams and sophomore outside hitter
Kayla Matthews had four, three and one, respectively.
Mitchell added 22 assists, while Kubinski led the Lopes at the net with three blocks and Horton added two.
"It was great to finally be able to play in front of our home crowd," Kubinski said. "They always bring a fun energy to the gym. I felt like this was a really great team effort tonight and I hope our fans are just as excited about the season as we are."
