The Grand Canyon women's soccer team fell 4-0 to Texas-San Antonio on Sunday night in the second game of a four-game homestand at GCU Stadium.
The match was delayed due to a monsoon storm that rolled into Phoenix two hours before kickoff. Strong winds with rain and lightning in the area limited warmups and delayed the start of the game by 15 minutes.
GCU (1-3) created the first chance four minutes into the game on a counter attack. Sophomore forward
Remmi Deutsch and senior forward
Andrea Martinez attacked the open space in the UTSA defensive line, giving junior forward Camyrn Larson a shot on goal that was saved by the goalkeeper.
The Roadrunners (2-1) scored a pair of goals in each half, two coming from Ellis Patterson for her first goals of the season. UTSA tallied 16 shots with 12 on goal, keeping GCU goalie
Lauren Garthwaite busy for most of the night. The Lopes freshman finished the night with eight saves, a new career high.
Despite being down early, the Lopes continued to be aggressive to create chances on the offensive end with 11 shots and six on goal, carrying over from a 15-shot performance against UTEP on Thursday. GCU freshman midfielder
Emma Anderson finished with a pair of shots on goal while freshman forward
Ellie Busik nearly scored her first goal on a shot that went off the crossbar midway through the first half.
Lopes freshman forward
Raeanne Jones also nearly scored her first goal in the 84th minute. A mistake by the UTSA goalie left a wide-open net for Jones but the header did not have enough speed and the ball was cleared at the goal line by a Roadrunner defender.
GCU junior defender
Sandra Hill saw her first action of the season, playing 30 minutes off the bench. Freshman
Haley Bostard recorded the most minutes in her time at GCU, playing 72 minutes off the bench while sophomore defender
Anna Whitaker played 42 off the bench supporting the Lopes' defensive line.
The Lopes will continue the homestand next week when they welcome Northern Colorado and Colorado State to GCU Stadium on Thursday,Sept. 5 and Sunday, Sept. 8.
