GCU selected as national team coach for NORCECA Champions Cup
Grand Canyon head coach Matt Werle was selected to coach the U.S. men's volleyball team in international competition at next week's NORCECA Champions Cup.
The U.S. men's team, composed of collegiate players, will compete against Canada, Cuba and Puerto Rico on Aug. 22-24 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The NORCECA (North, Central American and Caribbean Volleyball Confederation) event is hosted by USA Volleyball at the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center.
"My first experience with USA Volleyball took place more than 10 years ago as a player on the Junior National Team," Werle said. "We spent nearly a month in Colorado training prior the NORCECA Championships in Mexico. Things have come full circle with the return to this amazing complex and having the honor to coach this group of young men."
Entering his fifth season at GCU, Werle has accumulated a 67-50 record with the Lopes. He led his team to its first national ranking in 2017 and secured six top-15 wins in the 2018 season. Werle also was named the only men's head coach on the American Volleyball Coaches Association's "30 under 30" in 2018.
Werle will be assisted by Spencer McLachlin, the men's assistant coach at UCLA. Men's matches will take place at 7 p.m. Mountain Time on each day of the competition.
