The Grand Canyon women's soccer team earned a fifth-place spot in the 2019 WAC preseason poll, the league office announced Tuesday. This marks the sixth straight season that the Lopes have been predicted to finish fifth or higher in the conference coaches' preseason poll.
Seattle U, the 2018 WAC Tournament champs, was picked first with six of nine first-place votes and 61 poll points. The Redhawks were followed closely by Kansas City, which look to defend their 2018 regular-season title and picked up two first-place votes as part of its 52 points. UT Rio Grande Valley rounded out the top three with 48 points.
Last season, GCU went 6-13-2 and finished fourth in the conference with a record 3-3-2 in WAC play. The Lopes fell 2-1 in the first round of the WAC Tournament to fifth-seeded host Utah Valley.
GCU will wrap up exhibition play on Friday when the Lopes host Northern Arizona at the Scottsdale Sports Complex at 7 p.m.
