Grand Canyon University announced on Tuesday that Mike Vaught has resigned from his post as Vice President of Athletics, effective Aug. 12, for an opportunity in the private sector. Deputy Athletic Director Jamie Boggs will fill the position on an interim basis.
"GCU would like to thank Mike for nearly five years of service at the University," GCU President Brian Mueller said. "In a time of significant growth University-wide, Mike oversaw the athletic department's successful transition to NCAA Division I status and an expansive facilities enhancement project. We wish him and his wife Karri the best."
Vaught joined GCU in October 2014 amid the second year of a four-year transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. Upon successful completion of the transition and full D-I eligibility, Vaught led the Lopes to back-to-back WAC Commissioner's Cups as the top-performing athletic program in the conference and the 2017-18 WAC Academic Excellence Award as the conference's top program academically.
"I am grateful for an exceptional experience here at GCU and the tremendous group of people I was able to work with on a daily basis," Vaught said. "This University has a bright future, and I look forward to watching the continued development of the athletics department and University as a whole."
Boggs, who has served as the Deputy Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator since January 2015, assumes the interim role. In her time at GCU, Boggs has provided oversight of the day-to-day operations of the athletic department while serving as the sport administrator for baseball and men's soccer.
"We anticipate there will be nationwide interest in the VP of Athletics position due to the strong academic standing and growth of the University, our Christian mission and impact in the community, the success of the athletic program, state-of-the-art facilities and phenomenal fan support our teams receive," Mueller said. "We are also very fortunate to have someone like Jamie Boggs on staff who has played an integral role in the strategic planning of GCU's D-I transition. She has been instrumental in the growth of GCU athletics as a rising mid-major program."
Boggs also serves on the University's Diversity Council, Athletic Advisory Board and Title IX Committee while representing the WAC on the NCAA D-I Council and the NCAA Women's Basketball Oversight Committee.
Before coming to GCU, Boggs served as Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director and Chief Operating Officer at Georgia State University and an Assistant Athletic Director at Duke University.
A Phoenix native, Boggs graduated from the University of San Diego in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. She went on to attend law school at the University of Arizona and received a Juris Doctor in 2002. She is a member of the State Bar of Arizona.
