The Grand Canyon women's volleyball and beach volleyball programs received the 2018-19 American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award, the AVCA announced Monday. The Lopes account for two of 1,125 teams to earn the award last season, setting an all-time high for the honor after the previous year's record of 977.
GCU women's volleyball is one of 189 Division I programs honored, marking its third consecutive season on the list of recipients. The women's volleyball team earned a cumulative team GPA of 3.72 in the 2018-19 academic year.
Beach volleyball earned a spot on the list for the third consecutive season, as well as being recognized on the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll. The Lopes earned a team cumulative GPA of 3.81 in the 2018-19 academic year to earn a spot on the list. GCU is one of 41 collegiate beach volleyball programs to earn the award, topping last season's record of 23. The Lopes are one of only 10 beach volleyball teams to be named to the AVCA Team Academic Honor Roll, indicating the top GPAs in the AVCA.
The award marks GCU beach volleyball's second academic recognition of 2018-19, as the team also earned GCU's highest team GPA in the 2019 Lopey Awards.
