Grand Canyon sophomore basketball players
Carla Balague and
Laura Piera will play for Spain's national team in the U19 Women's Basketball World Cup, which starts Saturday in Thailand.
Balague and Piera were chosen for a 12-member Spanish team that is ranked second in the world entering the 16-team tournament. Spain opens pool play Saturday in Bangkok against Colombia and then will play Japan on Sunday and Germany on Tuesday before starting bracket play on Wednesday.
Piera, who came to GCU from Barcelona, is expected to start at point guard for Spain after doing so in 26 games as a freshman for the Lopes last season. The 5-foot-8 playmaker led GCU with 3.5 assists per game, which ranked seventh in the WAC. Last year, Piera played for Spain's team that placed second at the U18 European Championships.
Balague, also from Barcelona, started five games and made 26 appearances as a GCU freshman. The 6-2 power forward averaged 3.6 points and 3.5 rebounds in 17.3 minutes per game last season while shooting 51.4 percent from the field, the second-best clip on the team.
