Organization to help cultivate career, leadership, professional development in student-athletes, staffers
Grand Canyon Athletics entered a two-year partnership with Prime U, an organization that assists the wholistic development of student-athletes.
The partnership includes three campus visits per year, along with monthly consulting visits that will be tailored to engage GCU student-athletes and athletic administrators through career, leadership and professional development.
For student-athletes, Prime U covers aspects such as effective communication and decision-making, leaving a financial legacy and transitioning into adulthood. For administrators, topics such as engaging Gen-Z student-athletes, addressing hypermasculinity in sports and cultivating empathy in the workplace will be covered in-depth.
"We are really excited about the opportunity to partner with Prime U and further invest in our student-athletes," GCU senior associate athletics director for student-athlete development Jason Linders said. "We want to create the best possible student-athlete experience here at GCU. This partnership will allow us to create an additional means of follow-up after our workshops and supplemental opportunities for students to engage in personal development, including conversational-style video series and classroom-style videos along with worksheets, reflection questions and additional resources." Â
One goal of the partnership is to track and measure the holistic leadership capacity and growth of GCU student-athletes over a two-year period. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative analytics and 360-degree feedback, Prime U will give GCU student-athletes practical and relevant tools based on their needs to improve areas of self-awareness, emotional intelligence and communication and become more effective leaders.
"We are absolutely ecstatic about this partnership with GCU Athletics and the opportunity to have a deep investment in the lives of GCU student-athletes and athletic administrators," Prime U Founder and CEO Jarrod Barnes said. "From our inception in 2017, GCU has been a long-time supporter and friend. It's been our honor to help design a specific and intentional partnership that will have a lasting impact."
Barnes was on campus in September to speak to GCU student-athletes on "Finding Your Purpose and Developing Self Awareness." Barnes played and coached football at Ohio State before stepping away from the game to pursue a doctorate in Sports Management and find answers to the root of problems regarding how sport organizations are built and sustained. Barnes launched Prime U in 2017 and continues to advance this vision and mission of the company.
Prime U serves a number of professional franchises and college athletic departments, including the Los Angeles Rams, Kansas City Chiefs, University of Washington and the Pac-12 Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
