Women's volleyball, women's golf among tops in nation
The Grand Canyon women's volleyball and women's golf teams were recognized by the NCAA with Public Recognition Awards, bestowed on teams with an NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports based on their multi-year rates following 2017-18.
"We take great pride in how our student-athletes embody the highest standards of excellence in the classroom, on the course or in the arena, and in the local community," GCU Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Development Jason Linders said. "Our coaches have done an excellent job of recruiting and developing growing leaders and our faculty, Office of Student-Athlete Development staff, and administration assists our student-athletes in achieving their goals, including their academic endeavors, as they prepare for life after sport."
A total of 1,328 Division I teams from 321 schools received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the 2017-18 academic year. The most recent APRs are multiyear rates based on scores from the 2014-15, 2015-16, 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.
"Our APR numbers in all sports are continuing a positive trend, but it is rewarding to see our women's golf and women's volleyball teams' accomplishments recognized nationally," Linders said.
The APR measures eligibility, graduation and retention each semester or academic term and provides a clear picture of the ongoing academic performance for each team in every sport. All teams must meet an academic threshold of 930 to qualify for the postseason and can face penalties for continued low academic performance.
