GCU takes down Utah and Long Beach City

Grand Canyon beach volleyball went 2-1 on Friday at GCU Beach Volleyball Stadium. The No. 15 Lopes (16-8) took down Utah (3-4) and Long Beach City College (11-3) and fell to No. 7 Cal Poly (18-6) on Day 1 of a two-day home tournament.

Vs. Utah
The Lopes got the day started with a sweep over Utah. Senior Jamie Walsh and freshman Anaya Evans took the first win of the match on Court 4, taking down their opponents 21-11, 21-15. Sophomore Taylor Jarzombek and freshman Esmee Priem held the Utes to only eight points in the first set, winning 21-8, 21-15 on Court 5.

Junior Jessica Stansfield and sophomore Bella Bauman clinched the match with a win on Court 2, dropping the Utes 21-8, 21-19. Junior Hannah Towne and freshman Katie Hess followed up with a three-set win on Court 3, finishing 15-21, 21-11, 15-7 over Utah. Senior Mikaela Raudsepp and redshirt freshman Teagan DeFalco secured the sweep with another three-set court win for the Lopes, coming from behind to defeat the Utes 18-21, 21-15, 15-12.

Vs. No. 7 Cal Poly
GCU dropped a close match to No. 7 Cal Poly in its second competition of the day. Jarzombek and Priem fell on Court 5 to start the Lopes off 0-1, dropping the match 21-18, 21-19. Walsh and Evans answered with a win on Court 4, taking the Mustangs down in three sets, 16-21, 22-20, 15-10.

Towne and Hess put GCU up 2-1 over Cal Poly with a 21-19, 21-16 win on Court 3. DeFalco and Raudsepp fell in two sets in the one spot, 21-14, 21-14. The match came down to Court 3, which Stansfield and Bauman pushed to three sets before falling 15-21, 21-17, 15-11.

Vs. Long Beach City
Walsh and junior Micaela Mirabal started the Lopes off with a win on Court 4, taking down the Vikings 21-14, 21-5. Jarzombek and Priem secured another win on Court 5, 21-7, 21-11, tying the match at 1-1.

Bauman and Stansfield clinched the match with a 21-10, 21-15 win on Court 2. DeFalco and Raudsepp put the Lopes up 4-0 with a 21-18, 21-12 win on Court 1. Towne and Hess closed it out with another win for GCU on Court 3, topping the Vikings 21-16, 22-20.

Up Next
The Lopes return to action on Saturday with two more matches. They take on Mount San Antonio College at 11 a.m. and UAB at 2 p.m.
