Grand Canyon junior
Kade Mechals earned his first WAC Pitcher of the Week honor on Monday. Mechals was part of a combined one-hit shutout in a 7-0 victory over Chicago State in the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday.
The right-hander was perfect through 4 2/3 innings, retiring the first 14 Cougars he faced. The only baserunner Mechals allowed in his seven innings was a bloop single that landed between second base and right field. Mechals also added six strikeouts to his line and navigated his outing in an efficient 71 pitches.
Sophomore pitcher
Coen Wynne tossed the final two frames of the game without allowing a hit and striking out two to complete the shutout.
Mechals lowered his season ERA to 2.22, the conference's second-best mark. The junior is one of only four pitchers nationally to win nine games. He also leads the WAC in opponent batting average (.180) and is fourth in strikeouts (68).
Mechals represented the second of three strong starts for Lopes pitchers on the weekend. Freshman
Pierson Ohl threw a one-run complete game Friday and sophomore
Jack Schneider threw six scoreless innings in the doubleheader's second game Sunday. GCU pitching allowed one run in 27 innings on the weekend for a 0.33 ERA in the series sweep.
Mechals matched
Jake Wong's team high with nine wins from a year ago.
GCU closes out a six-game road stretch with two games at New Mexico on Tuesday and Wednesday.
