LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Sophomore catcher
Kaileigh Holland tallied a single, double and home run in game one of the Saturday night doubleheader, as the Lopes (27-19, 9-3 WAC) split the twin bill with a win in the first game and a loss in the second to New Mexico State (23-19, 6-6 WAC) at NM State Softball Complex.
GCU came out on top of the Aggies in game one, 6-4, but were shutout in game two, 4-0, to close the series with NMSU on top, two games to one.
GAME 1
Sophomore catcher
Kaileigh Holland put the Lopes on the board with a lead-off home run in the top of the second frame. Sophomore first baseman
Kaylee Dietrich followed it with a double to right center, allowing a groundout to advance her to third and an RBI single from senior center fielder
Maddie Dowdle to send her home for the run to put GCU up, 2-0.
In the bottom half of the second frame, the Aggies tied the game with a 2 RBI home run to left center field.
Holland fired again in the top of the third frame with two runners on, as the sophomore nailed an RBI double to left field to send senior shortstop
Shea Smith home from second for the 3-2 lead. With Tourville on third, sophomore designated player
Lilly Bishop put an RBI single up the middle to send Touville home for the 4-2 lead to end half inning.
Dietrich used a sacrifice fly in foul territory in the top of the fifth frame with runners on first and third to send
Shea Smith home for the 5-2 lead.
New Mexico State cut the Lopes lead to one with an RBI single up the middle and an RBI double to left center in the bottom half of the fifth, but GCU came back with a bases-loaded hit by pitch to Dietrich to send a runner home for the 6-4 final.
GAME 2
After four and a half scoreless innings, the Aggies broke the tie with a two-run home run to go ahead, 2-0. NMSU added another two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth for the 4-0 lead.
The Lopes offense was unable to get anything going in the second game, as GCU came up short to NMSU, 4-0.
GCU returns to GCU Softball Stadium next weekend to host WAC-leading Seattle U on Friday, April 26 and Saturday, April 27.
