LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Grand Canyon softball team made a comeback in the top of the sixth frame to tie the game, but a two-run bottom half of the seventh from New Mexico State (22-18, 5-5 WAC) left the Lopes with a 4-2 loss on Friday night at NM State Softball Complex.
With the defeat, the Lopes (26-18, 8-2 WAC) drop only their second conference game of the season as GCU fell in the March 30 series finale at California Baptist.
Senior shortstop
Shea Smith led the offensive effort for the Lopes with a pair of bunt singles Friday, while GCU tallied six total hits on the night. Junior right-hander
Brianna Aguilar (5-5) came into the game in the first frame in relief and dished two strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.
The Aggies struck first with a runner on second, as senior Kelsey Horton hit a two-run home run to right field to put NMSU up 2-0 in the bottom of the first. The Lopes and the Aggies played four full scoreless innings after the pair of runs.
With one out on the board in the top of the sixth, sophomore designated player
Kaileigh Holland was walked to put a runner on base for GCU. A bunt single from
Shea Smith moved her over to second to put two on for freshman
Savannah Tourville.
Tourville laid an RBI single past the third baseman to send Holland home and put Smith on third before a bases-stealing distraction from freshman
Rachel Hammons on first allowed Smith to steal home for a 2-2 tie.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Aggies used a walk-off two-run home run to end the series opener.
GCU and NMSU return to close the series with a doubleheader Saturday at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. (Phoenix times) at NM State Softball Complex.
