NORMAN, Okla. – The Grand Canyon softball team came up short to Drake (12-9) and Tulsa (12-7) on Friday at OU Softball Complex to start the OU Home Tournament. The Lopes (12-11) lost 3-1 to Drake and fell 8-0 to Tulsa.
GCU's lone run of the day was driven in by freshman
Savannah Tourville, as the second baseman brought fellow freshman
Taylor Olsen home with a left-side base hit.
Junior
Loriann Olson tallied her first two hits of the season against Tulsa and earned her first start in right field after returning from injury.
GAME 1
Drake started the scoring early, plating a pair in the top of the first frame off an error by the Lopes defense and a double stolen base play by the Bulldogs.
With two outs on the board and runners on first and second, Drake struck again on a full count with a single to left field to send a runner home to go ahead, 3-0.
Tourville sent Olsen home in the bottom of the fourth frame with a single through the left side to put the Lopes on the board. GCU tried to continue the momentum by putting runners on second and third after the run but couldn't bring anyone else home.
Junior right-hander
Brianna Aguilar came in for sophomore starter
Lexy Coons in relief and dealt three strikeouts in a row in the top of the fifth frame.
The Lopes offense couldn't get anything going in the final two frames and GCU dropped its first game, 3-1. Senior
Sierra Smith was 2-3 against the Bulldogs, while Olsen tallied the only other hit for GCU.
GAME 2
Tulsa got on the board quickly in the first inning with a one-out double to left field, sending a runner home for the 1-0 lead.
After two and a half scoreless innings, the Golden Hurricane struck again with three runs off an error and a two RBI double to go ahead, 4-0. Tulsa added a run in the bottom of the fifth with a single to the right side to lead GCU, 5-0.
Tulsa added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth frame on an error, a single to the left side and a walk for the 8-0 final decision.
Olson was 2-3 on the game, while
Sierra Smith tallied a hit to round out the Lopes three base hits on the game.
GCU returns Saturday to face Northwestern and No. 3 Oklahoma at 2:30 p.m. (Phoenix time) and 5 p.m., respectively, to close the tournament.
