OREM, Utah — Behind another strong day from its offense, Grand Canyon clinched the series against Utah Valley with an 11-4 win on Saturday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
GCU once again pounded out seven extra-base hits, matching Friday's total. The Lopes put together back-to-back games of at least seven extra-base hits for the first time since returning to Division I.
"We had a nice approach," GCU head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "We did a nice job the last couple of days of committing to getting to first base. You do that, you get runners in scoring position, then you get a big knock to drive in some runs. We did a real good job the last couple days of moving runners over and getting them in. That's something that the guys can be excited about. It's a good offensive approach. We just have to stay there."
The Lopes got to Wolverines ace Paxton Schultz for 12 hits and 10 runs over his 5 1/3 innings of work. Schultz entered Saturday's contest with a 3.51 ERA and was the reigning WAC Pitcher of the Week.
"The guy we faced today has had a good year," Stankiewicz said. "He's got a good arm. He's one of the better pitchers in the conference. For us to put good at bats together against him, I was really pleased with our offense."
The Utah Valley defense did itself no favors by committing six errors on the afternoon, resulting in three of Schultz's 10 charged runs being unearned.
All nine GCU batters reached base with eight picking up at least one base hit. Junior outfielders
Quin Cotton and
Kona Quiggle led the charge with Cotton picking up a team-best three hits and Quiggle a team-high three RBIs.
Freshman pitcher
Pierson Ohl improved to 3-3 on the year with his longest start. The right-hander tossed seven innings of three-run baseball, matching his best in strikeouts with five. After allowing a single to open the game, Ohl retired 10 consecutive Utah Valley batters to set the tone for the afternoon. If not for a two-run homer in the seventh, Ohl would have picked up the complete-game victory in a mercy-rule win.
"He keeps getting better and better every time out," Stankiewicz said. "He seems to be gaining confidence every time out. That's great to see. He's learning and he's a student of the game. He understands the game and understands what he wants to do on the mound. He's gained a nice little rhythm.
"(Catcher) David (Avitia) is doing a great job of his pitch calling with him and knowing what he can throw and what his strengths are. For a freshman to step in here and, from Day 1, pitch on the weekends and be real competitive, that's certainly a plus."
The Lopes were on the scoreboard almost immediately after senior second baseman
Austin Bull led off the day's proceedings with a double. Cotton scored Bull when he reached base on a groundball error. Quiggle and senior third baseman
Tyler Wyatt each singled to put GCU up 3-0 early.
GCU's 3-0 lead held until the Lopes plated eight runs among the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to break the game open.
Sophomore designated hitter
Brock Burton opened the fifth with a double and scored on a Quiggle sacrifice fly. Sophomore first baseman
Cuba Bess doubled in a run before a third run scored on an error.
In the sixth, Cotton, Quiggle and Wyatt strung together consecutive run-scoring hits, highlighted by a Quiggle two-run double.
Finally, the Lopes extended their advantage to 10 runs when Bull hit a home run to left. The GCU leadoff man, known as a contact hitter, logged his second career home run in his 738th plate appearance.
GCU clinched its first WAC series win of the season and moved within a half-game of UT Rio Grande Valley for first place in the WAC.
The Lopes have claimed six consecutive victories over Utah Valley dating back to 2017.
The teams will meet for a Sunday series finale at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time) from UCCU Ballpark.
