GCU breaks nine-match winning streak

Grand Canyon beach volleyball dropped its first match of March on Thursday against No. 6 Hawaii (11-4). The No. 17 Lopes (10-3) started the night strong with a 2-0 lead over the Rainbow Wahine before falling in their final three matches in the Hawaii 3-2 win.

The loss breaks GCU's nine-match winning streak.

Senior Jamie Walsh and freshman Anaya Evans collected the Lopes' first win of the match, taking down their court five opponents, 21-15, 21-16. Freshman Esmee Priem and sophomore Taylor Jarzombek got off to a strong start on court four, outscoring the Rainbow Wahine 21-18 in the first set. Hawaii came back with a 21-15 win in the second set, forcing the match into a third set. Jarzombek and Priem put the Lopes up 2-0 over the Rainbow Wahine with a come-from-behind, 17-15 win in the third set.

Sophomore Bella Bauman and junior Jessica Stanfield dropped the first match of the day on court two, falling to the Rainbow Wahine 21-15, 21-17. Results on courts one and two followed quickly with junior Hannah Towne and freshman Katie Hess dropping court one 21-13, 21-16, and senior Mikaela Raudsepp and redshirt freshman Teagan DeFalco falling on court three, 21-15, 21-17.

Junior Micaela Mirabal and freshman Ava Elia earned a win over the Rainbow Wahine, taking their exhibition opponents down in two sets, 21-19, 21-18.

The Lopes continue this weekend in Irvine Valley, Calif., taking on Concordia, Irvine Valley and No. 14 Stanford on Sunday at 10 a.m., noon and 1 p.m., respectively.
