Lopes falls in three sets to Trojans
LOS ANGELES – The Grand Canyon men's volleyball team fell in straight sets to No. 14 USC on Thursday night, dropping the MPSF opener by scores of 25-14, 25-22 and 25-16.
GCU's (7-6, 0-1) last four matches have all lasted only three sets with the Lopes coming away with a 1-3 record during the stretch. USC (7-4, 1-0) had 20 service errors but used a .404 hitting percentage to keep the Lopes at bay.
The Lopes could not find their rhythm on the night, posting season lows in a number of categories. GCU had the edge in digs with 32 which ties its three-set season-high.
The dig performance was led by freshman libero Cole Udall who led all players with 12. Senior opposite Will Schwob led the Lopes in kills with nine and added six digs. Freshman outside hitter Christian Janke saw his season-long double-digit kill streak fall as he recorded five on 13 attempts. Sophomores Trevor Weary and Ian McLain gave GCU some late life, each serving up an ace in the third set. The Lopes failed to record a block in the match, however, another season first.
The match started with both sides trading leads early. However, USC used a 5-0 run to make the score 13-7 and did not look back. The Trojans used a steady flow of scoring runs to halt the GCU attack and hold them to a .077 hitting mark, taking the set 25-14.
The second set started like the first but with a different tone. Neither side held more than a two-point lead throughout. GCU called a timeout midway through the set and came out with a Janke kill before forcing USC into an error to pull the Lopes within one at 16-15. Still trailing by one, Weary entered the match and kept it close. GCU was forced to use its second timeout down 23-21, and a Trojan service error greeted them soon after. But it was USC that secured the final two points and took the set. GCU flipped the script from the beginning of the match, hitting .391 with two errors in the second.
After getting their hitting back on track, the Lopes returned to their first-set ways, hitting at a negative mark in the third. GCU had some life halfway through the set when McLain used a kill to tie it at 13. The Lopes were not able to capitalize on the momentum, however, and only scored three more points before falling 25-16.
GCU heads over to Irvine to face Concordia-Irvine on Saturday before returning home. First serve against the Eagles is set for 8 p.m. (Phoenix time).
