Grand Canyon is not used to home losses in the GCU Arena era but losses where the Lopes fade as the game wears on are most unsettling.
GCU trailed for most of the Summit League/WAC Challenge game against Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday night but it worsened when the Lopes needed a second-half rally. GCU trailed by five with 12 minutes remaining but Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 19-7 run to leave GCU Arena with a 71-60 victory.
The Mastadons (5-5) won for the third consecutive game, holding their opponents to 40% percent shooting or worse in each win. On Saturday, they received a career-high 28-point game from sophomore point guard Jarred Godfrey while GCU shot 40% from the field.
Lopes junior center
Alessandro Lever scored a team-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting but his teammates went 13 for 40 from the field. Purdue Fort Wayne hit 20 shots in the paint and scored another 10 points from the free throw line.
GCU looked like it would play with the carryover it sought from Monday's win when it took a 7-2 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. just over three minutes into the game.
But the concerns about Purdue Fort Wayne's propensity for shooting 3-pointers proved to be for naught when the Mastadons easily got to the rim continuously. Purdue Fort Wayne went on a 23-5 run over the next eight minutes with drives and the Mastadons' only three first-half 3-pointers carrying that turnaround.
That Purdue Fort Wayne run created its largest lead at 25-12 with 8:26 to go until halftime but they kept it at a 13-point gap. Blacksher scored six consecutive Lopes points as the defense kept the Mastadons from making another field goal for nearly the final 4:42. GCU was grabbing some momentum but closed the half with a dribble that went off senior power forward
Lorenzo Jenkins' leg and Blacksher having his shot blocked.
That turned into a final first-half possession for Purdue Fort Wayne, which grabbed momentum back with a Dylan Carl follow slam that out the Mastadons down 36-28 at halftime.
