Lopes sign pair for 2020

The Lopes began its look toward the 2020 season with the fall signings of two in-state recruits.

With 12 players on the 2019 roster from Arizona, the Lopes keep strong in-state ties by adding goalkeeper Jordan Ferguson and midfielder Reese Mendenhall from Phoenix.

Mendenhall will start her GCU career a semester early, wrapping up high school in December at Chandler Online Academy before joining the Lopes in January. While listed as a midfielder, Mendenhall showed the ability to play all around the field, including in a defensive back position.

Mendenhall played two varsity seasons at Seton Catholic High School in Chandler, where she scored 24 goals in 26 matches and posted a 17-goal season in 17 games as a freshman. That season earned her first-team selections to the all-state and all-conference teams, as well as team MVP honors.

Mendenhall then joined the Utah Royals AZ, a U.S. Soccer Development team based in Arizona. In two seasons, she appeared in 37 matches with 34 starts and six goals.

In her club career, Mendenhall earned all-conference and Player to Watch honors. She trained at a U.S. Soccer Training Center and as a member of Sereno Soccer Club in 2017, she was one of 32 players who were part of the Generation Adidas Select group that traveled to Lyon, France, to train with professional soccer club Olympique Lyonnais.

Ferguson will join the Lopes in the fall of 2020 after giving her verbal commitment in 2017. Ferguson, while attending Desert Vista High School in Phoenix, played primarily with SC del Sol, a U.S. Soccer Development Academy in Phoenix.

Since 2017, Ferguson has appeared in 66 matches with 56 starts in goal, including 34 starts during the 2018-19 season as a member of the U-17 team.

Current GCU players Tyler Ferguson, Raquel Hagar, Ciara Bianchi and Syndey Torres also played for SC del Sol.

Ferguson already has a deep tie to GCU with her older sister, Tyler, just wrapping up her freshman season as a Lopes defender. She has attended many GCU matches as a fan with her sister and her parents.
