SAN DIEGO — San Diego State has won at one of the 14 highest rates in the nation over the past decade and loaded up its team with quality Division I transfers this season.
The combination was far too much for a Grand Canyon team in its current state to handle on the road Wednesday night. The Lopes came out strongly and tried to make one too-tough comeback before falling 86-61 at San Diego State.
The Aztecs (3-0) shot 55% from the field and made only seven turnovers to smack the Lopes (0-3) with 13 3-pointers by the team and six dunks by one player. GCU came out strongly for a 10-8 lead and made 6 of its first 10 shots to only trail 19-16 through nine minutes before an offensive downturn. GCU missed 15 of 17 shots for the rest of the first half to wind up in a 40-24 hole after sophomore center
Alessandro Lever fell into foul trouble again.
Lever fouled out in 16 minutes on Friday night against Illinois and did not last much longer Tuesday, when he fouled out after 20 minutes of play with four points and two rebounds.
GCU defeated SDSU in 2015 and 2016 but could not hang with the Aztecs' depth this time, going scoreless for the final five minutes of the first half and then struggling when it made its only push to within 12 points with 9:38 to play.
The Lopes are off to an 0-3 start for the first time since 2002, when the third loss also happened in San Diego. GCU took care of the ball for the second consecutive game but shot only 36.5% from the field and 22.2% on 3-pointers (4 for 18).
Lopes senior power forward
Lorenzo Jenkins recorded his season high with 15 points, two points off his career high at Colorado State, while 5-11 freshman point guard
Jovan Blacksher Jr. led GCU in rebounding with 10 while adding 14 points and playing all but one minute of the game.
The Lopes had their best offensive stretch in the second half, when they scored on eight consecutive possessions with 10 of the 19 points coming from Jenkins to cut the lead to 56-45. The Lopes could not sustain the effort, going without a field goal for almost six minutes to wind up losing big.
