Grand Canyon junior right fielder
Quin Cotton was named a preseason All-American by Perfect Game on Tuesday, earning second-team honors to become the first Division I preseason All-American for the rising Lopes program.
"Perfect Game has established itself as one of the premier baseball publications," GCU eighth-year head coach
Andy Stankiewicz said. "With Quin being named as one of its preseason All-Americans, it is an honor for both Quin and GCU baseball."
Cotton was named the 2018 WAC Player of the Year for a breakout sophomore campaign in which he hit .390 with 29 extra-base hits and 43 RBIs. It was the second consecutive season that a Lopes' right fielder was named the conference's Player of the Year after
Garrison Schwartz was honored in 2017.
The Parker, Colo., native's statistics flooded the national leaderboards last season to rank 14th in batting average (.390), 11th in hits (94) and 27th in runs per game (1.09).
Following up the breakout spring season, Cotton succeeded at the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League over the summer and was named an All-Star there.
Cotton is the lone WAC representative on Perfect Game's All-America list and one of three Arizona representatives. Arizona State sophomore designated hitter Spencer Torkelson is on the first team with Arizona junior third baseman Nick Quintana being named to the third team.
GCU will open its season on Feb. 15 against Wichita State for the grand opening of the completed Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.
