The Grand Canyon women's soccer team suffered a 2-1 defeat on the road Friday night against Northern Colorado.
Lopes senior midfielder
Brylee Hawkins scored her first goal of the season in the eighth minute but the Bears scored two unanswered goals in the 12th and 74th minutes to win.
GCU started the game off aggressively on the offensive end with five of their six shots in the first half on goal. Hawkins scored from the right side of the box to give the Lopes early lead in the eighth minute.
GCU (1-6) matched Northern Colorado (4-3) in shots with nine and had six of them on goal. Goalkeeper
Abby Burton tallied three saves on the night, as the GCU back line was busy throughout the game with Northern Colorado attempting six corners.
After the goal by Hawkins, Northern Colorado responded with a goal by Taylor Bray in the 12th minute and a goal by Mariel Gutierrez in the 74th minute, her third goal in as many matches.
The Lopes were quiet on offense in the second half, not attempting their first shot until the 72nd minute. GCU created chances at the end of the match in search of the equalizer. Seniors
McKenzie Cook and
Kelsey Smith each attempted a shot in the final 10 minutes but both shots went wide of the goal.
GCU will look to end a streak of four consecutive one-goal losses by finishing the road trip on a high note Sunday, when it faces Colorado State in Fort Collins at 11 a.m. (Phoenix time). Â
